Wednesday Februrary 1 : Radial Unity

Today's Targets:
I honestly think about the elements and principles of art before/while I am making my art.
I feel confident using adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.

Before we start, does your Less is More have:
4 square images?
Your name and Less is More in text?
Value in background?
Is it saved as a JPG and in your portfolio?

Good! Let's start Project 2- Radial Unity

Purposeful Exploration: Radial design // Unity // 
We will start by finding the definition of Radial & Unity and examples of radials and unity in images online. Show what you find in your NOTES.

We will use Photoshop to create a radial design using your LIM 4.

This is broccoli.

This is a peacock.

If we have time, we will open Adobe Illustrator and vectorize this radial.

Tuesday January 31 : Less is More

Today we will start a design project called Less is More

Targets:
I honestly think about the elements and principles of art before/while I am making my art.
I feel confident using adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.
  • Written directions are HERE
  • If you need a large image to use today use Broccoli.
  • All images made today should be saved in your HOME DIRECTORY (H Drive).
You should have:
Four images
All square
Grayscale
Zooming in
Last one Inverted
Background has a value
Your name and Less is More on page
Saved as a PSD and JPG
Put in your portfolio

Monday January 30 : Extra/ Make up Day

Happy Monday! You have a few things to make sure you have done today.

1. Your Crazy 8 should be in your portfolio by now. If not, finish it and insert it after the Quarter One Artwork slide.

2. Finish your portfolio cover and save as a JPG. Insert that on the first slide of your portfolio.

SEE MY EXAMPLE PORTFOLIO HERE.

3. Use Google Images (Modifications allowed, large size files) to find one images we will use for our next project.


The images must have TEXTURE.
Find one image of each of the following: An Animal, Something that is growing out of the ground, Something that is natural but not man made, Something that is manmade. Save in your H Drive in a new folder called Less is More.

ex. Zebra, Sunflower, Rock formation, Car engine





EXTRA...
If you would like to move toward an A for midterm, make an extra Crazy 8.

Friday January 27 : Portfolio Cover in Photoshop

BEFORE WE START!!
Open your portfolio. Check yours against mine (find in LINKS on my gussvat site).
Organize your Home Directory Folder. Make a folder for Crazy 8s and Portfolio Covers.
Move files in to them.

Today we will continue to practice your Photoshop skills one more time to make you a Portfolio cover for your Midterm portfolio check.

Targets:
I honestly think about the elements and principles of art before/while I am making my art.
I feel confident using adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.
  • Your portfolio cover will be a JPG that goes right on to of your first slide.
  • It will be 15 inches wide and 11 inches tall at 150 resolution in Photoshop.
  • Use the new Text tool to typeVAT Portfolio or Visual Art & Technology portfolio and your name.
  • Use any skills we learned in Crazy 8s.
  • Use images that are labeled Reuse with Modifications allowed
  • Make it look UNIFIED (like everything fits together well).
  • Save as both a PSD and JPG file.
EXPECTATIONS:
by the time class ends...
you will have your Crazy 8 and your Portfolio cover in your Google Drive portfolio.
You will Share this portfolio with me.

Thursday January 25 : Crazy 8s to Portfolio Cover

Targets:
I honestly think about the elements and principles of art before/while I am making my art.
I feel confident using adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.

I'd love to see how your Crazy 8s turned out. Let's take a look before we finalize them.
Do you have a FOCAL POINT?
Save your Photoshop file as a JPG when you are done.

Next... use what you've learned in Photoshop to create a Portfolio cover for your portfolio.
New tool: Type Tool
  • Your portfolio cover will be a JPG that goes right on to of your first slide.
  • It will be 15 inches wide and 11 inches tall at 150 resolution in Photoshop.
  • It must say VAT Portfolio or Visual Art & Technology portfolio and your name.
  • Use any skills we learned in Crazy 8s,
  • All imagery should be labeled for Reuse with Modifications Allowed
  • Make it look UNIFIED (like everything fits together well).
  • Save as both a PSD and JPG file.

Wednesday January 24 : Make that Crazy 8 crazy

BIG TARGET: I feel confident using Adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.
SUB TARGETS:
I can explore more basic tools in Photoshop.
I can create an image that has a focal point (emphasis).

Today you are to finish your Crazy 8.
You will complete eight layers with 8 different techniques:
(layer 1) Transparency
(layer 2) Blend Modes
(layer 3) Image Adjustments
(layer 4) Selection Shapes and delete
(layer 5 and 6) Eraser/ Eraser Brush
(layer 7) Paint with Brushes (make the brush transluscent?)
(layer 8) Filters

When you finish each technique you can rearrange the layers and play with how you want the outcome to look. When it looks the way you want, save it.

After you have updated your saved Photoshop file, save as a JPG.
File/Save As. Choose JPG and save to your H Drive.

If you are done, you can play with Photoshop or make a 2nd Crazy 8. Another attempt will move you toward an A for the next grading period.

Tuesday January 24 : Crazy Eights

BIG TARGET: I feel confident using Adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.
SUB TARGETS:
I can explore more basic tools in Photoshop.
I can create an image that has a focal point (emphasis).

Yesterday you downloaded images to your H drive to use in the Crazy Eight project.

We created a New File that is 8x8 inches, 188 res, RGB color.
We File/Placed each layer, and hit Enter.

Today we will learn some Photoshop basic tools:
Ctrl-T/Enter
Shift to constrain proportion
Layers
Move Tool
Auto Select
Layer Visibility (Eye)
(layer 1) Transparency
(layer 2) Blend Modes
(layer 3) Image Adjustments
(layer 4) Selection Shapes and delete
(layer 5) Eraser
(layer 6 and 7) Brushes
(layer 8) Filters




***If you still need images, use mine for today's demo!!
Then find your own when we have work time to replace them.



Monday January 23 : Photoshop play & Crazy Eights

Before we begin...
Make a copy of the Semester Portfolio. (Finished example FYI)
Title it Your Name VAT Portfolio Class period
Put it in your VAT folder on Drive in your Portfolio folder.

Target:
I feel confident using adobe programs and online tools to make digital art.

To start you in Photoshop we will start the Crazy Eights project.


This will give you more practice with LAYERS and more new tools.

First we have to find new images to use for your project- eight in fact.

Use the website flickr to find images that are NOT copyrighted. Save an image in each of these categories to your H Drive:
  1. Person or People
  2. Black & White pic
  3. Landscape
  4. Drawing
  5. Map
  6. Pattern or Texture
  7. Clouds or Outer Space
  8. Painting
Make sure at least ONE image has a Focal Point ( a clear main subject). Here are examples...

Go to the Google App store and add the following apps:
Psykopaint
Sketchpad
Webchemy
InspirARTion
Vector Paint
Webcam Toy
*What am I missing?

Spend about 15 minutes playing and then the last 25 making something you save/download.

Day Three

Thanks for being on your own yesterday; let's check those notes!
Share them with me before you leave.

This semester you will learn a TON... about many things.
These are your semester targets,
and you'll discover...
>What types of art YOU find fun!

>The Internet and its resources... (Google everything!)

>The computer and programs... (Adobe programs) PhotoshopIllustrator 
Photography and Design... separately and together

To be successful in this course:
  • Check this website DAILY- bookmark it by clicking the star on the URL line
  • Check your district Google email and your Google Drive.
  • Ask questions verbally or though email (wguss@d155.org) a lot.
  • Try everything... you might not love it but you have to try it
  • Improve and show growth in the Five Criteria
  • Do lots of research! Collect references in Google Slides (My example Note HERE)
  • Make lots of art and keep up with the portfolio. (Example portfolio HERE)

Day Two: On your own...

As I mentioned, I'm not here today I'm setting up our District Art Show.

So you are on. your. own.

Yesterday we started our Research Notes for class. Today your goal is to finish those notes.

What kind of art do we cover in VAT? Add a slide for each
  1. Photography
  2. Graphic Design
  3. Typography
  4. Digital Illustration
  5. Animation/ GIF/ Moving Image
Each slide should:
  • Have words. What is this about? Find a quote or definition that makes sense to you.
  • Find images show examples of the art, and as an option, could contrast that definition (ex. random snapshot vs photomontage made in Photoshop). At least THREE.
  • Make that slide look as organized and as attractive as you wish.
